SAN FRANCISCO — Heirloom spice company Spice Tribe has partnered with Chef Reina Gascón-López, founder of The Sofrito Project, to debut three spice blends in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month.

The Sofrito Project is a website created by Chef Gascón-López in 2017 where she explores her multiracial background and cultures through cooking and writing, according to the company. As a Puerto Rican-Southerner, she specializes in elevated homestyle cooking and approachable comfort foods with a flair for Puerto Rican tradition.

The spice blends are available in three varieties:

  • Sofrito: an aromatic blend of cilantro, onion, bell pepper, garlic and coriander.
  • Smoky sazón: a smoky mix of black pepper, garlic, annatto, paprika, salt, turmeric, cumin, coriander and oregano.
  • Black garlic adobo blend: an umami blend of black garlic, salt, onion, black pepper, oregano, cumin and turmeric.

The Sofrito Project Collection of spices is available direct-to-consumer at spicetribe.com for a suggested retail price of $27.99. Each spice blend comes in a 1.75-oz glass jar and contains no additives, GMOs or fillers.

“My intention behind creating these blends was to simply share my beautiful culture with others,” said Chef Reina Gascón-López, founder of The Sofrito Project. “Cooking and sharing my food is something that’s been passed to me from both of my grandmothers and mother. And since cooking plays such a huge role in Puerto Rican culture, I want to share with others the diverse flavors that are the true root of our dishes.”
